Engines Everywhere…
The beating heart of any race car, the engine is always the focus of attention when it comes to increasing performance and shaving tenths off lap times. Of course, it’s never quite that simple, and chasing out every last horsepower can often mean a trade off in reliability and durability that could cost you a lot more than you’ll ever gain from those couple of tenths.
Here at Miller Motorsport, we strive to build engines that will not only provide the power to keep our cars at the front of the grid but also give the confidence that they will maintain that output right through the season.
Our Miata Trophy engines are built strictly to the series regulations, which prohibit any significant modification with the aim of preventing ‘cheque book racing’ from taking over the series. We fully support this approach, and focus our attention on putting together engines that will provide the longevity we need to make sure we get to the end of each race without worrying about bits dropping off!
Of course, there are little modifications and details that help to squeeze a little more out of each block but we won’t go into that here of course! The main focus for us to get the engines put together the way Mazda intended, with every gap, clearance and tolerance to factory specification. In practice this means that each engine is assembled, checked and measured, disassembled, cleaned and re-assembled numerous times before it’s ready to leave our shop.
For more open series such as Trackday Championship or Trackday Trophy, we’ve got a more more scope for modifications in the head, pistons and even the crank to boost power output and
Fortunately, this is a labour of love for Alex, who loves nothing better than being tucked away in the shop setting pistons, seating valves and burning through plastigauge. This means that we always have a couple of spare engines in hand, ready to fire into action to support our customers in getting to the front of the grid, and usually have at least another one partially assembled on the engine stand awaiting a bit of love and attention!
We’ve managed to pick up 1st, 2nd and 3rd over the last couple of years with engines built by us, so we must be doing something right. If we can help you with either a complete engine, repairs, rebuild or refreshing of your own engine please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
